We're back... Miri and I are doing the Live Below the Line challenge for the next five days in an effort to raise funds for izImbali Zesizwe, an amazing organization that feeds vulnerable children and families in need in Imbali, South Africa. We'll share more about the organization as the week goes on. Today we start with the challenge: to eat and drink of R10/C$1 per day for 5 days. We had to buy all of our groceries up front, and anything that did not fit in the budget cannot be consumed... even a dash of salt is out of bounds. Here is what the two of us will be eating for the next five days:
- 11 apples - we'll be fighting for that last one ;)
- 1kg of maize meal - which cooks up a big pile of starch that looks like mashed potatoes but tastes like, well, nothing
- 1kg of potatoes - this is a new addition this year. I'm hoping we don't regret all the starch
- 1 medium box of oatmeal - no milk, honey, sugar, or berries to assist. just plain ol' oatmeal
- 1 can of baked beans - that's going to be an amazing treat we're saving for later in the week
- 1 large head of green cabbage - emulating my baba on this one
- 2 small onions
- 1 tomato - yes, just one :(
- a roll of liver pate - look there next to the baked beans... it's REALLY tiny
- A box of Knor chili-beef flavoring - Miri's brilliant idea from last time. Flavour is so worth the R6 budget sacrifice!
And that's it folks. Food for the two of us until next Saturday. I'm thinking of adding a new step tonight: meal planning. We haven't done that in the past, but I want to try to resist eating the treats until later in the week.
And remember, we're doing this for a cause, so we challenge all readers to donate what you can spare... or join us if you dare! It's an extremely humbling experience.
